Treaty of Middelburg

Freedom has to be something everyone can experience and fighting for equality and peace in the world is one of the steps that needs to be taken. There can’t be freedom if people aren’t equal and that’s why I think it is important to fight for and also why I do it.

Why do you want to participate?

I want to participate because I think it is importantly to connect with other young people who are also interested in politics and the democratic values especially during these times.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom means to me the option to express myself the way I want and to not face repercussions. Freedom also means not living in fear of or during a war, fascist regime and big corruption. Freedom in the way I know it is not something everyone can experience that’s why it is important to educate yourself and others on this matter and fight for those who can’t really experience it now.

What are the biggest challenges?

One of the biggest challenges is the rise of right wing ideas and morals. Political parties who follow extreme right-wing ideologies threaten our democracy and with it our freedom. Also due to the rise of social media misinformation is being spread and this can also be threatening to our freedom. The idea of putting people in certain groups and exclude them due to their religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender to differentiate oneself from them and to feel better about yourself is very harmful.

Do you have a message?

Not particularly just that I am happy that such events are existing and young people aren’t left alone but they are given an opportunity to connect and fight for what they think is important.
