Treaty of Middelburg
If I could change something in the world when it comes to freedom, it would be making sure that young people have a real say in decisions that shape their future. Too often, governments and institutions make policies without including the voices of those who will be most affected by them. I believe that young people should have more opportunities to participate in decision-making, whether in politics, climate action, or social justice. I would also want freedom not just to be a privilege for some but a right for everyone. This means breaking down barriers like economic inequality, discrimination, and digital manipulation that limit true freedom. Everyone should have access to education, reliable information, and the resources they need to make their own choices without fear, suppression, or restrictions. Finally, I’d like to see more often the connection between freedom and sustainability. A healthy planet is essential for long-term freedom, but right now, environmental destruction is limiting opportunities for future generations. Freedom should go hand in hand with the responsibility for each other, and for the world we live in.

Why do you want to participate?
As a student of Global Sustainability Science, I recognize that sustainability encompasses not only environmental and economic stewardship but also social equity and freedom. I believe, that the International Youth Freedom Conference offers a unique role on this topic by educating youth on the concept of freedom, allowing students to engage with diverse perspectives, and contribute to shaping a future where freedom is integral to sustainable development. Participating in this conference aligns with my commitment to integrating freedom into the broader sustainability agenda.
What does freedom mean to you?
For me, freedom is both the ability and the power to act, think, and express myself without undue restrictions. True freedom is not just about having choices but also having the necessary resources and an environment that enables those choices to be meaningful. It extends beyond action, it includes the freedom to think independently, to aspire without limitations, and to voice my beliefs openly. Moreover, freedom is deeply connected to responsibility, since I believe it thrives in a society where individuals respect and uplift one another, ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity to live authentically and without fear.
What are the biggest challenges?
There are several major challenges young people face regarding freedom today, many of which are connected to global political, economic, and social issues. One of the biggest and most obvious challenges I see is the fear caused by armed conflict, political repression, and discrimination. Over the last few years, I have also realized how the climate crisis is becoming a major limitation for young people’s future. Natural disasters, displacement, and resource scarcity are restricting freedom of movement and opportunities, while governments and corporations often prioritize short-term economic gains over sustainable policies, leaving young people to deal with the long-term consequences. Another major challenge is economic inequality. Rising costs of education, housing, and healthcare are forcing many young people into financial dependence or unstable jobs, making it harder for them to achieve true independence. Social and digital freedom is also something I see as a crucial challenge. Misinformation and digital manipulation make it difficult for young people to access reliable information and make informed decisions. At the same time, social expectations can limit career choices, relationships, and personal beliefs, making it harder to fully exercise individual freedom. Lastly, I believe that the limited political influence of young people is another key issue. Many governments and institutions still exclude youth from policymaking, even though we will be the most affected by today’s decisions. Young people struggle to have their voices heard, which makes it even harder to create a future that truly represents our needs and values.
Do you have a message?
My message would be that true freedom is not just about having choices, but also the resources, opportunities, and a voice in shaping the future. Young people deserve to be heard in decision-making, to have equal access to education and economic independence, and to live in a sustainable world where their freedom is respected and protected.
