Treaty of Middelburg

I would like to see a greater equity in access to opportunities, ensuring freedom is not limited by economic status, geography or political systems. True freedom should mean everyone has the chance to shape their own future without systemic constraints.

Why do you want to participate?

I want to participate in the International Youth Freedom Conference because I am passionate about the intersection of politics, economics and global governance. As I believe that freedom is a fundamental pillar of an ideal just and prosperous society. Through my studies in European Studies and Business Engineering, I have explored how economic policies and international institutions shape societies, and I see this conference as an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on these topics with like-minded people, as the value of cross-cultural dialogue in tackling global challenges is essential. This event provides a unique platform to contribute my insights while learning from others to further develop my perspectives on freedom, democracy, and policy-making.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom to me personally is more than just the absence of constraints: it is the ability for individuals and societies to pursue their aspirations without undue interference, albeit while ensuring collective well-being. Freedom is not only about political rights, such as democracy and free speech, but also about economic empowerment, access to education and opportunities for personal growth. True freedom for me, requires a balance between individual liberties and social responsibility: whether it is in the context of global governance, economic policy, or technological advancements, I believe freedom should be safeguarded through inclusive policies that allow individuals to thrive while contributing to a fair and sustainable society.

What are the biggest challenges?

For me there are two big challenges: firstly, it is about the balance between digital freedom with security and privacy. Today's technology, in contrast to 20 years ago, offers immense opportunities for expression and activism, but it also comes with risks, such as surveillance, misinformation and corporate control. It is essential young people have access to reliable information, being able to freely express themselves while their privacy is protected. Secondly, political underrepresentation and economic insecurity might limit young people's freedom: examples such as rising living costs might make financial independence more difficult to achieve, and thus might restrict opportunities for personal and professional growth. In policymaking, young people's voices should be heard; a feeling that might be limited today even though our generation is leading global movements in climate action, human rights and social justice.

Do you have a message?

I am very much looking forward to the conference, can't wait to connect with everyone!
