Treaty of Middelburg

Freedom is a complex and fragile thing, and history has shown that threats to it can come from many directions. Instead of focusing on specific groups or nations, I believe the biggest challenges to freedom today are authoritarianism, misinformation, and polarization. These forces can arise anywhere and from anyone, regardless of nationality or religion.

Why do you want to participate?

As the youth ambassador for liberation and commemoration in Bergen op Zoom, I play an active role in raising awareness among young people about our freedom and the sacrifices that were made to achieve it. Within the youth council of Bergen op Zoom, I am committed to keeping history alive and passing on the significance of remembrance to future generations. On October 26th, I am organizing a major freedom event for the youth of the Brabantse Wal, bringing together young people from Bergen op Zoom, Woensdrecht, and Steenbergen to reflect on freedom and the impact of war. This event is not only a moment of remembrance but also an inspiring experience where we think together about the future and the responsibility that comes with freedom. During the celebration of 80 years of freedom in Bergen op Zoom, I delivered a speech that deeply moved many attendees. It was an emotional moment, making the connection between the past and present tangible. On May 4th, I have the honor of speaking again, this time to 1,200 Canadian students at the Canadian War Cemetery in Bergen op Zoom. There, I will share a message of gratitude and remembrance with young people from across the ocean, whose ancestors fought for our freedom. In addition, I work closely with Stichting Bevrijding Brabantse Wal to develop lessons for primary schools, ensuring that even the youngest generations learn about the meaning of remembrance and the history of our region. This way, I help keep the stories of the past alive, ensuring they are never forgotten.

What does freedom mean to you?

To me, freedom is more than just the absence of oppression; it is the ability to live with dignity, to make choices without fear, and to shape our own future. It is something we often take for granted, yet it comes with responsibility—to protect it, to respect it, and to ensure that others can experience it as well.

What are the biggest challenges?

One of the biggest challenges regarding freedom for young people today is exactly what you mentioned: we are forgetting our past. The further we move away from historical events like World War II, the fewer firsthand witnesses remain to share their stories. This makes it easier for people to become disconnected from the struggles and sacrifices that secured the freedom we enjoy today.

Do you have a message?

Never stop asking questions, never stop learning, and never stop standing up for what is right.
