Treaty of Middelburg

I think there are a lot of countries in the world where people are not truly free and although I am realistic enough to know that I am not able to change the world by myself, overnight. I would like to contribute towards the conversation of freedom for people. In the end, I would love for every person on this earth to live, act, speak and think as they want and not under the oppression of another person's beliefs. I especially have a heart for children, if there is anything I would want to have an impact on - its the lives of children (and the youth) around the world who are living in oppression.

Why do you want to participate?

I would love to be a part of the discussion regarding freedom, coming from a country where people had to fight for their rights and freedom it is a matter that lies close to my heart. I believe that we all have a responsibility to form a part of the conversations that are held, especially when they have an impact on our future. I think this conference presents a good opportunity to meet fellow students who have the same passion for people and justice as I do.

What does freedom mean to you?

This is a difficult question to frame into words. I think freedom is one that can be conceptualised at many different levels. You can be free, or live freely or have freedom. I believe that freedom is a right that everyone should have, whereby they are able to dictate their own lives and are not held by the shackles of other peoples opinions, judgements, discriminations, etc.

What are the biggest challenges?

I think that the polarity of different beliefs in the world today constitutes the reason why the youth may experience freedom or the lack there of. I think that besides the societal pressure of young people today to be something, or do something and the expectations placed upon us from all different angles - social media also plays a massive role in hindering the freedom that the youth may experience. I think that when you think about it, a lot of the challenges that hinders the youth from freedom is also what allows the youth to be free so it is quite difficult to navigate that.

Do you have a message?

Not necessarily, I just want to be present and learn and share and be a voice for the youth in a matter that I feel is very important.
