Treaty of Middelburg

There is so much that needs to change that I don’t even know where to start. But if I had to choose, I would begin with women’s rights. In many countries, women are still heavily oppressed, denied basic rights, and lack the freedom to make their own choices. Even in Western countries, gender equality is far from achieved, with issues like the gender pay gap, discrimination, and limited representation in leadership. True freedom means equal rights and opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender, and that’s something I want to help change.

Why do you want to participate?

Freedom and democracy are values I deeply care about, and I believe it’s crucial for young people to take an active role in shaping them. As a European Studies student at Maastricht University, I’m passionate about international cooperation and political engagement. I’ve always been involved in promoting participation, whether as a student representative in school or now, as I apply for a similar role at my university. Recent political developments, especially in Germany and Europe, have strengthened my determination to stand up for democratic values. The Youth Freedom Conference is a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people, exchange ideas, and work on something meaningful. I would love to contribute, learn, and be part of this important conversation on the future of freedom.

What does freedom mean to you?

To me, freedom means having fundamental human rights and the ability to live without fear. It means being able to go outside without worrying for my safety and to be my true self without fear of judgment or discrimination, regardless of gender, religion, or skin color. True freedom is not just about individual rights but about creating a society where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

What are the biggest challenges?

One of the biggest challenges young people face today is the rise of misinformation and political polarization, which threaten democracy and free expression. Social media can be a powerful tool, but it also spreads hate, fake news, and division, making it harder to have open and respectful discussions. Another major issue is the threat to personal freedoms, whether through discrimination based on gender, religion, or ethnicity, or increasing restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights in many parts of the world. Many young people still don’t feel safe being themselves. Lastly, climate change and economic instability are limiting young people’s freedom to shape their own futures. Many worry about job security, education costs, and the impact of climate crises on their lives. Without action, these challenges will only grow, making it even more important for young people to stand up for their rights and their future.

Do you have a message?

Young people have more power than they realize, we are not just the future, we are the present. If we want to protect freedom, democracy, and human rights, we need to speak up, get involved, and take action now. I believe that no one should have to live in fear for being themselves, whether because of their gender, religion, or background. And I believe that true change starts with education, awareness, and collective action. If we stand together, we can build a world where freedom is not just a privilege for some, but a right for all.
