Treaty of Middelburg

I would try to teach people differently. People must be able to learn what they want. People must be taught that there are many things you can do for a hobby and that it is alright to keep looking for one. But people must be taught that with certain freedom of choice, there comes responsibility for being able to make that choice. Think of the Montessori type of educational system, but probably culturally adjusted.

Why do you want to participate?

Problem solving is fun. Problem solving in a group of bright minds is even more fun. We get to broaden our network and learn more different practices. For me as an industrial designer, participating in this event is important to strengthen my multidisciplinary skills.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom for me is being able to imagine tomorrow without feeling anxious or scared. Whether for economic, political, cultural or self-expression reasons is up to one's interpretation.

What are the biggest challenges?

Government paternalism where it isn't needed, various social and cultural stigmas, and lack of experience for finding ways to self-express. All these are really geography and culture related, but the fact of their existence is universal.

Do you have a message?

Evaluation of many aspects of our lives. By evaluating how free people feel in schools, universities and work spaces, we could probably be able to evaluate where some of the existing problem areas are and how we can solve them. The exact design approach (what type of data collection and data processing methods) is probably yet to be defined.
