Treaty of Middelburg

If I could change something in the world regarding freedom, I would advocate for a universal recognition of the freedom to redefine oneself, a freedom that goes beyond social expectations, labels, and the constraints of predetermined paths. Drawing inspiration from the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, who championed the idea of the Übermensch (the "overman" who creates his own values), I believe true freedom lies in the ability to break away from societal scripts and continuously evolve our identities.

Why do you want to participate?

I want to participate in the Youth Freedom Treaty because freedom is not just a state of being but an ongoing practice. As Jean-Paul Sartre posited in his existential philosophy, freedom is an individual’s responsibility; one cannot separate freedom from choice, action, and commitment. Through this challenge, I aim to embody that responsibility and join a collective effort to not only reflect on freedom but also to live it fully. I believe that engaging with like minded peers who share this vision will allow me to understand freedom in diverse ways and actively contribute to creating spaces where every young person can explore and assert their own autonomy.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom, to me, is more than the absence of oppression; it is the opportunity for self-determination. It’s the ability to speak, act, and exist authentically without fear of subjugation. Freedom means breaking down the invisible chains that confine us, whether those chains are societal expectations, fear of judgment, or the limitations imposed by a lack of opportunity.

What are the biggest challenges?

The biggest challenges regarding freedom for young people today revolve around the influence of technology, particularly AI and social media. Young people face issues of surveillance and privacy as algorithms track their online behavior, shaping their experiences and limiting freedom of thought. AI-driven systems and automation also threaten career opportunities, as many jobs become obsolete, diminishing the freedom to choose work. Additionally, the digital divide creates inequalities, with some young people lacking access to technology, while others struggle with their data being exploited for profit. These challenges point to the need for balance where technology empowers freedom, rather than undermines it.

Do you have a message?

A lot has been on my mind when it comes to freedom, especially for young people today. We’re living in a world with endless opportunities, but also many pressures.Social media, technology, and societal expectations constantly shape who we are or think we should be. But for me, true freedom is about finding the courage to define myself, to create my own path, and not let anyone or anything limit that journey. Freedom isn’t just a right, it’s something we have to choose every day. We need to embrace the power to change, grow, and be authentic without fear. That’s the kind of freedom I hope we all can have.
