Treaty of Middelburg

I acknowledge that this may sound utopian and there are many challenges to it, but I envision a world where certain fundamental freedoms are universally recognized and upheld by all countries. Regardless of differences in beliefs, religions, or cultures, there should be core principles that everyone adheres to—principles that ensure basic freedoms for all people. These foundational rights should serve as a framework for a world where everyone is free to live their lives with dignity and opportunity, while ensuring that no one is left behind. This vision calls for global cooperation and empathy, but I believe it is possible to create a world where freedom and equality go hand in hand.

Why do you want to participate?

I want to participate in the International Youth Freedom Conference because I am deeply concerned about the direction in which our societies are heading. Our generation has grown up in an environment shaped by the hard-fought struggles of previous generations, benefiting from freedoms that were not easily won. However, I see a worrying trend where these freedoms are taken for granted or, in some cases, undermined by politicians seeking power rather than prioritizing the protection of individual liberties. As a young social liberal, I feel a responsibility to contribute to a broader conversation about freedom and unity. The opportunity to engage with others at this conference would allow me to learn from diverse perspectives and collaborate on shaping a shared vision for a future grounded in freedom and equality. I am eager to meet like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and be part of a collective effort to safeguard the freedoms we have inherited.

What does freedom mean to you?

To me, freedom is not just the absence of restrictions; it is the ability to live one’s life according to personal values, make independent choices, and express oneself without fear of oppression. Freedom encompasses both individual rights and collective responsibility. It means having the autonomy to shape one’s future while respecting the rights of others. As a young social liberal, I believe that true freedom is inclusive—it ensures equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of background, identity, or beliefs. Freedom is also about fostering unity among people, where diverse ideas and voices can coexist and contribute to a better, more just society. I view freedom as an ongoing journey, one that requires constant vigilance and active participation to preserve and expand it for future generations.

What are the biggest challenges?

What do you think are the biggest challenges regarding freedom for young people today? One of the biggest challenges regarding freedom for young people today is the growing political landscape where leaders often take our freedoms for granted or, in some cases, use their power to restrict them. There is a concerning trend of electing politicians who seem more focused on consolidating their power than on safeguarding the rights and freedoms that previous generations fought hard for. This erosion of trust in political institutions and the increasing polarization in many societies pose a significant threat to the liberties we enjoy. For young people, this creates a sense of uncertainty about the future, as we face challenges like rising surveillance, limitations on freedom of speech, and a general lack of accountability from those in power. Additionally, there is a sense that the voices of younger generations are often ignored in key decision-making processes that will shape their futures. Overcoming these obstacles and ensuring that freedom remains a fundamental right for all requires collective action, informed debate, and a shared commitment to preserving the freedoms that define democratic societies.

Do you have a message?

My message is simple but vital: we must recognize and respect the vast differences in cultures, religions, and beliefs around the world. It's essential that we avoid imposing a single way of life on others. Instead, we should celebrate diversity and encourage mutual understanding, allowing people to live their lives in a way that aligns with their values and traditions. True freedom comes from respecting these differences and fostering an environment where everyone can coexist with dignity.
