Treaty of Middelburg

I think there needs to be a change in the way governments, institutions, companies or even universities etc think about transparency. Although most say they are dedicated to upholding transparency, and some are, there is always a lack of transparency behind the thought process of policy-making and agenda setting, and will not only limit our knowledge, but eventually our freedom.

Why do you want to participate?

I think it is important to participate in this event as not only do I want to expand my own knowledge about freedom within the EU, but it will also provide me a very important and valuable opportunity to share and express my own ideas, coming from an international perspective.

What does freedom mean to you?

I believe freedom is the ability to exercise free will without hindering another person’s own ability to exercise their own free will.

What are the biggest challenges?

I think the biggest challenges of freedom for young people today is social media and misinformation. I believe that social media can be used as a great tool to connect, inform, educate others about anything, which is an amazing way for our generation to exercise our freedoms (namely, freedom of speech). However, this ‘great tool’ can be also used to hinder our rights and our knowledge. With the unprecedented rise of AI, knowing what is real or not in social media is becoming increasingly difficult to spot, and I believe this is an example of what is hindering our freedom.
